When Teen Counseling May Be Helpful
Growing up can be a tumultuous time for teenagers. Counseling and therapy may be helpful when teens need professional support.
Emotional and Mental Health Concerns in Teens
Teens can sometimes struggle with mental health issues that can affect their daily functioning and prevent them from thriving. Some emotional and mental health issues that young people may experience can include:
- Identity issues
- Poor self-esteem
- Body issues (which can lead to eating disorders)
- Mental health disorders, such as anxiety, depression, or eating disorders
- Developmental, educational, and learning disorders, such as autism or attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
- Life changes, such as moving
- Grief and trauma
- Substance use
In severe cases, teens may struggle with serious issues such as self-harm or suicidal thoughts. Although it is normal for teens to experience mood swings or “teen angst,” it is not normal for these feelings and thoughts to severely impact daily functioning and well-being.
Behavioral, Academic, and Social Stressors
Several stressors can contribute to a teen struggling with their mental health. Some of which can include:
- Bullying
- Peer pressure
- Social media
- Family conflict
- Acedemic pressure
- Social and societal expectations
- Preparing for adulthood
- Puberty and bodily changes
Part of treatment for teens is helping them navigate these stressors and develop healthy coping skills to de-stress as needed. That way, teens develop a tool-kit of skills they can use now and as young adults.

What a Teen Therapy Session Looks Like
The First Session and Ongoing Therapy Sessions
Our therapy sessions are overseen by licensed and certified teen therapists, such as an LPC or LCSW. The first sessions are primarily spent developing a rapport and a safe space for your teen to feel comfortable enough to express themselves. Our therapists will take time to get to know your teen and their concerns and then help them develop the goals they have for therapy. Teens are welcome to ask questions and spend time getting comfortable.
After trust is established between your teen and their treatment provider, they move on to the working stage of therapy. Here, your teen will focus on addressing the problems that they have with their therapist. This is also a stage where your teen may resist treatment or test boundaries by increasing unwanted or problematic behaviors. Though you may feel discouraged, this is normal, as behaviors will tend to get worse before they get better.
Once this stage is complete, your teen will enter the growing stage, where they begin to make progress on their treatment goals. Your teen will begin to put in the hard work needed for personal growth, and you will start to see an improvement in their behavior. This part of therapy is focused on learning how to develop and utilize coping skills and better manage their emotions and behavior.
Building Coping Skills and Emotional Regulation Over Time
After several sessions of therapy, your teen will be ready to ingrain healthy coping skills into their daily life. This empowers them to become more self-regulated and resilient as they practice their newly learned skills in and out of therapy. Their therapist will encourage them to practice their skills with continued guidance as needed. This may take some time, especially for teens who may need to feel more equipped before feeling comfortable leaving therapy.
Once your teen has become confident in themselves, has stabilized, and mastered their skill use, we begin the discharge process for a joyful graduation.
Our Evidence-Based Approach to Teen Therapy
Individual, Session-Based Teen Therapy
Our session-based therapy services are tailored to be flexible, which best helps teens get the care they need with minimal disruptions to their lives. That way, teens are not rushed through treatment and can focus on healing at their own pace. Each session is overseen by a licensed clinician or other mental health care professional.
Personalized Treatment Plans for Each Teen
Each teen receives a carefully tailored and personalized treatment plan designed to meet their individual needs. This allows us to give targeted care in the areas where your teen needs help the most while also boosting their strengths. These plans incorporate not just treatment, but wellness and coping strategies to promote lasting personal growth.
Therapy Modalities Used in Teen Counseling
Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
CBT is a psychotherapy commonly used in teen therapy as it helps identify harmful thoughts and behavioral patterns. Teens then use CBT to develop strategies to change these harmful patterns and regain agency over their mental health.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
DBT is a psychotherapy used to help teens manage intense emotions and improve interpersonal relationships. It combines CBT techniques with mindfulness practices to teach teens skills such as distress tolerance, emotional regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness.
Trauma-Informed and Mindfulness-Based Approaches
Mind Works utilizes therapy that is sensitive to teens who experienced trauma. As such, we use therapies such as eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) to help teens process their trauma without being retraumatized in the process. We include other mindfulness approaches to therapy, such as solution-focused therapy, which helps teens build on their current strengths to facilitate positive change.

Success Stories
“Highly recommend Mind Works. I am a clinician in Illinois and needed to find a clinic in Texas that could provide services to my client that was moving. This is no easy feat to do across the United States. Mind Works was fabulous to work with from the very beginning. Coordination of care was 5 stars and my “previous” client is very happy with their new counselor. Thank you very much for going above and beyond during this difficult time so many other counseling offices are facing. I appreciate all the help and coordination you offered my client!”
Shelley Skas
“I have known the owners for over 8 years and have taken a family member to Mind Works. Therefore, I can speak of them both personally and professionally. There truly is no better place for this service, especially for children and young adults. On the personal level, I know how much they truly care about everyone they meet. On a professional level, the entire staff is a reflection of the dedication to helping others and competence that gets results that the owners exude. During the incredibly trying time of this pandemic and the fear and anxiety it has caused many people, we are incredibly blessed to have Mind Works available to support.”
